With winter comes more time spent at home, and with more time spent at home comes many considerations to the air quality of your home! Upping the air quality in the winter for many can be a challenge as it is tough to keep your home healthy and comfortable when there are a multitude of heat sources running, less ventilation available and dry winter air all happening at once.
While these challenges do present themselves, there are ways to fix these issues and help keep you and family healthy and happy. Below we’ve listed some of the air quality problems you may face, as well as how to fix them.
Sometimes where heating systems are not available or present, using wood stoves, fireplaces or even a coal stove in some instances can be used to help heat up homes. These systems, while being an effective heat source, can ultimately result in a lot of pollutants being released into the air. As these systems do not always operate the most efficiently in comparison to a furnace or water heater, the likelihood of carbon monoxide leaking into your home is much higher. To avoid having this happen, it is critical that proper ventilation is used when these systems are operating and that you have your stove and/or fireplace inspected by a professional each season.
Did you know that the dry winter air actually comes from the outdoors and not your furnace? When the temperature outside is below freezing, it’s an indicator that the air is very dry. This dry air can make its way into our homes, resulting in dry air indoors. Space heaters can exaberate this issue, and unfortunately even the most well-insulated homes can experience this. The results of dry air can cause discomfort in your nose, eyes and throat. To prevent this, it’s best to use a humidifier. A humidifier can put that missing moisture back into the air and help keep you and your family healthy.
Taunton Trades has a great selection of humidifiers to choose from.
In the winter, most of us try our best to keep our doors closed and our windows down to prevent cold air from coming in. The problem with this is that less air will be able to circulate around your home, resulting in pollutants getting trapped and building up in your home. To limit this, it’s important to keep your home clean and dust free by mopping surfaces frequently, changing the filter on your furnace and cleaning out vents (or in some instances, having a full duct cleaning service done). A professional can help you out with this.
