5 HVAC Tips For The Fall

Fall is finally here, and while you might be thinking about drinking hot chocolate, or wearing warm clothes, it is important that you take some steps to maintain your HVAC system. As the weather changes from hot to cold, your HVAC system will need some maintenance to ensure it will be working appropriately when winter arrives. Read our list below to learn 5 HVAC tips for the fall.

 1. Check Air Filters

Checking your air filters is top on the list because it is something that should be done every 3-6 months. And if you have a cat or a dog that sheds often, your air filters should be checked every 2 months. Checking your air filters ensures that your HVAC system runs smoothly. If your air filters are clogged, your heater is more likely to work overtime, therefore increasing your energy bills. Additionally, working overtime will decrease the lifespan of your system. When checking your air filters, make sure to check for dust and debris, so that you can replace your air filters if needed!

2. Check Thermostat

Sometimes thermostats can malfunction, and they might present wrong readings on the screen. To prevent this from happening, it is best to purchase a programmable thermostat, so you can set the temperature ahead of time for the upcoming week. If you already have a programmable thermostat, it’s crucial that you change your summer weather settings to fall weather settings, so that the temperature will be warm for the upcoming cold weather.

3. Check Outdoor Unit

Like your air filters, if you have an outdoor unit, you need to check it. Outdoor units get dirty due to the summer weather, and especially from grass or soil. In the fall, your outdoor unit will be exposed to the cold weather, and also be susceptible to accumulating leaves from trees. Whenever you check your outdoor unit, you need to make sure to clean any debris around the unit to ensure there is proper airflow throughout the system. It’s important to remember that a clean unit is also a long-lasting unit!

4. Seal Up Leaks

While this tip seems like a no-brainer, it is also crucial to mention. Checking your HVAC system does not only require you to observe your system, but it also requires you to do some work for your system. As stated above, if your air filters or outdoor unit are dirty, you need to clean them. In this case, if you notice damage or areas where there are leaks, you need to seal them up. Every air leak will make your furnace work harder than it normally should, which will increase your costs. Air leaks can be solved with tape, caulking, and others. If you are having problems sealing the leaks in your unit, call a trusted HVAC technician to help you out!

5. Prevent Clogs In Drain Line

The last fall HVAC tip is to prevent clogs in your condensate drain line. The condensate drain line runs through your HVAC system and can prevent your system from working properly if it gets clogged. If you have easy access to your drain line, you can stop it from getting clogged by pouring a mixture of bleach and water down the drain. However, if you think your drain line might be clogged and you are unsure how to unclog it, it’s best to talk to a professional.

While most of these fall HVAC tips can be done by yourself, some might be more challenging than others. If you ever need help maintaining your HVAC system, Taunton Trades is just one call away!
